A spring, also known as a rising or resurgence, is a component of the hydrosphere.Specifically, it is any natural situation where water flows to the surface of the earth from underground. The Water Resource Management Authority should look into protection and improving of springs and other water resources.
Unimproved springs are often shallow ponds or a stretch of soggy ground-(like in this case of Kamkunji). These are sources of contamination in which mosquitoes can breed – malaria is a real problem throughout Kenya!
Generally springs are protected to increase spring water yield and reliability, protect the spring from pollution as well as water contamination during water draining by users. It also facilitates improved access to the spring.
The improvement for users collecting their water is enormous. Before a spring is protected, users usually have had to cope with a muddy hole with steep slippery banks, where filling of containers is extremely difficult. You can imagine the difficulties of lifting, and the risk of slipping with a 20 litre jerrycan of water out of such a location! With the spring protections users can now walk down concrete steps, place their jerrycans under the discharge pipe and then walk out with their load in safety. Water quality of course is greatly improved by the elimination of surface contamination.
Users take great pride in looking after their new spring protections, often planting flowering shrubs to beautify the area. A fence is built to keep stock out and the grass surrounding the spring is kept well trimmed. A Village Committee who have been elected to represent all sections of the community including women, will coordinate the village firstly to apply for help, then to assist in construction and finally to be responsible for maintenance through appointed and trained caretakers.
That is what should be done to remedy the situation in this picture!
A pessimist gripes for the blowing wind; this optimist wants them to swap; and the realist changes this sails. We should take finite disappointment, nevertheless have to in no way reduce unlimited trust.
I AM NOT A WATER ENGINEER. BUT I GUESS THIS SOURCE SHOULD BE PROTECTED. ONE OPTION IS TO TAP THE SPRING WATER INTO A BUILT RESERVOIR FROM WHICH TAPS WILL BE USED TO SUPPLY THE WATER TO USERS. INN THIS WAY THE CONTAMINATION OF WATER COULD BE PREVENTED AND USERS ENSURED OF HAVING SAFE WATER.
